?SideScreen for applets
A small screen that clips on the side of your monitor for all your desktop widget needs.
Desktop widgets are only any good if you have a massive screen and so have the space to keep them on. They are mostly providing information such as the time, news or stock feeds that do not change at a great rate. I can't afford that much space for them on my 12" screen so I have never bothered. The first PC that we had at home, an Apricot, had a little LCD screen on the keyboard that could display different infomation and also give a set of keys a dynamic function. It is odd that this has not been continued.
A sidescreen is the solution. It would be made using an e-ink screen that is about 2" wide and the same hight as your screen. It would be only a couple of milimeters thick and would stick on the side of your regular screen. If you are a laptop user then it could fold back around when you are on the move. Connected by USB it could accept any of the major widgets types. For now greyscale would be okay but I am sure as the technology gets better a colour version could be made. The main thing is that it is light and low power so that you hardly notice it is there.
Bonus: Make it powered by it's own battery and talk over bluetooth for a "no wires" solution.
No dobut somebody is sitting on a patent waiting for the first person make it but I think this is my idea. (c) 2008
